BACKUP for Life

In 2016 the NSW Government through the NSW Police Force provided funding to NSW Police Legacy to develop the BACKUP for Life Program. At this time, it was recognised that NSW Police Force like most Australian police forces were developing and implementing mental health programs for their serving officers, however, officers transitioning out of the service were faced with a broad range of mental health and other challenges without support.

The BACKUP for Life Program was designed to support former and transitioning NSW Police Officers and their immediate families with counselling services, mentorship programs, health and well-being workshops, and career confidence and job seeking skills to assist to transition into the civilian workforce.

Over the past 5 years NSW Police Force has developed a Career Transition and Deployment Pathways support function with several initiatives implemented to provide support in-house and through external providers. New support services cover the following: access to information, family support, wellness and active programs, career transition, career development programs, and support after medical retirement.

With the improvements made within the NSW Police Force the funding to NSW Police Legacy for the BACKUP for Life Project concluded from 1 July 2021.
