In preparation for writing my December report I read over what I had to say this time last year, and it started to look like the year had repeated itself. We are going through crazy times, but at least now we can see the end in sight with the help of vaccinations and a lot of hard work by our police and health professionals in keeping our communities safe.

2021 has been another challenging year. Our plans were interrupted, and many of us faced a long and difficult separation from loved ones. With all face-to-face visits and events cancelled for several months, online service delivery provided alternative ways to support legatees.

At the beginning of August, our Chief Operating Officer Kellie Cooper and Chair Det Supt Gary Merryweather attended (via Zoom) the National Police Legacy Managers' Meeting & Conference.

For the second year in a row, we were unable to gather at the NSW Police Wall of Remembrance in The Domain, or the NSW Service Memorial in Surry Hills. We were unable to be there to honour the memories of those taken too soon. For the second year in a row, we realised that no matter the circumstances, no matter the difficulties, we will always remember them.

It was with sadness but with the safety of our whole community in mind that we made the difficult decision to postpone the Remembrance Bike Ride until 29 April – 1 May next year. However, we have been immensely heartened by the support we have received for this decision, and for the incredible work of our Satellite riders, going their own way to raise funds for the Police Family in a COVID-safe manner.
