New Directors Welcomed

May 2017

The NSW Police Legacy Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 9 May. This meeting welcomed four new Directors to the Board of Management.

Each of our Directors volunteer their time and energy to this charity with no reward or benefit. We offer our sincere thanks and appreciation to Mr Ken Moroney, Chief Inspector Cath Cole, Detective Senior Constable Jane Prior, Mr Raff Del Vecchio and Sergeant Robert Minns for their individual and collective contributions to our charity.

We welcome to the Board of Management Detective Superintendent Mark Hutchings, Superintendent Gary Merryweather, Sergeant Jon Goddard and Mr Michael Aalders.

Detective Superintendent Mark Hutchings

Mark joined the NSW Police Force in 1981 and commenced criminal investigations in 1987. He continued his investigative career at the Major Crime Squad North Region, National Crime Authority, NSW Crime Commission and Specialist Operations. Mark also performed duties as a Police Negotiator at State and National Level.

In 2004 he was promoted to Detective Superintendent, Operations Manager Central Metropolitan region, responsible for the coordination of all major events, operations and criminal investigations for the Sydney CBD. This included the operational response to the Cronulla Riots in 2005. In 2006 Mark was appointed as the Commissioners Chief of staff, Chief Superintendent to former Commissioner, Ken Moroney.

In 2008 he was appointed Commander, Marine Area Command, responsible for all state-wide marine related crime and the coordination and control of all marine search and rescue incidents.

Superintendent Gary Merryweather

Detective Superintendent Gary Merryweather attested to the NSW Police Force in 1987 performing duties in the Parramatta and Granville areas. Gary has also performed duties in Country NSW, Criminal Investigation. He was promoted to the Rank of Superintendent in 2008, taking up the position of Commander of Monaro Local Area Command at Queanbeyan.

In January 2014 Gary was appointed as Commander, Blacktown Local Area Command, and took up the position of North West Metropolitan Region Spokesman for Domestic Violence. To champion this cause further Gary is an active White Ribbon Ambassador.

For the past three years Gary has been an Executive Member of the NSW Police Association, representing the Commissioned Officers, and is a delegate for the Police Federation of Australia.

In this role Gary has been active in supporting the welfare services provided to the membership and is a member of the welfare committee which is responsible for the strategic direction for the Association's welfare services. He has also been an active supporter of NSW Police Legacy, being a participant in the annual Remembrance bike ride to Canberra.

Sergeant Jon Goddard

Sergeant Jon Goddard was appointed to the Board of Directors in May 2017 as a representative of the Police Association of NSW. He is currently the Police Association of NSW Member Support Coordinator.

Mr Michael Aalders

Michael is a Retired Sergeant of the NSW Police Force. He joined in 1982 working mainly in the inner city and Sydney Metro area in general duties.

In 1993 he became President of the Triple O Charity organisation, and together with other Police, Fire and Ambulance employees, raised over $1.5M for various charities. In 1994 he became a Director on the Board of Management of the Police Benevolent Fund and later in 1995, a Director of the Police Provident Fund. He has been an Executive Member of the Police Association of NSW since 2006.

Michael retired from the NSW Police Force in August of last year, however he is continuing to pursue his passion in police and family welfare through his involvement with NSW Police Legacy.
